JN our last week's issue we gave preliminary details of a newious station which will probably be erected in Swansea in the neak future. This has been deemed advisable in 'view ef the narrowness of many of the thoroughfares which are used by buses plying to and from the town on the many

services which are run. , The use of various termini by buses on these services. has 4. resulted in congestion of the highways, which, has, caused considerable inconvenience to the travelling public, as well as to bus owners. Visitors to Swansea, which takes 'second place only to Cardiff as the largest business centre in Wales, complain that they are sorely perplexed to find, the right starting places for buses travelling to any given Opt. Much trade has thus been lost to bus proprietors, and visitors have been compelled to seek alternative means of transport for reaching adjacent localities.

The lack of vehicle parking places and particularly of a central bus station, has long engage:d the attention of the local (mined, which, however, has found the difficulty almost insuperable. A scheme, howevete is to be put forward for the council's consideration, and this, it is claimed, will easily solve the question of bus termini. It is proposed to use the present market site as a bus station and vehicle park, the market being erected over the

space which would In used by the vehicles. At the same

time it is proposed to divide the overhead floor so as to apportion part of the spice for use as a public hall. The cost of the scheme is estimated at £110,000, and, if carried out, the Swansea Corporation will be the owner of the 'largest bus station in the country. It is anticipated that an annual revenue of 4:21,000 will be received by way of vehicle and market tolls, rents from shops, etc.—a sum more than suffi. dent to meet loaf charges, etc. As will be seen from the plan reproduced herewith, it is intended that a series of. shops should be constructed to face Oxford Street, behind which will he the waiting-room for bus , passengers, administrative block of buildings, etc., these offices also backing on to a large platform for use as a loading and unloading station. A 30-ft. roadway sepaxates the platform from the site intended for parking coaches, buses, and other motor vehicles and sufficient space is available conveniently to house NO vehicles of the largest type. It is suggested that vehicles using the parking site and bus platform should pay a toll which, it is eskimated, will produce £8,000 per annum.

It is contended that the limitation on the number of bus licences which can at present be issued, and which is imposed by the difficultyarising from street congestion in Swansea, would be largely* eliminated if a suiTable central terminus was

provided. In consequence, additional revenue, by way of bus tolls,. would accrue from the licensing of supplementary vehicles.

It is expected that a grant towards the cost of the scheme would be forthcoming from the Ministry of Transport, and application will probably be made for such assistance. The matter is to be inVestigated by the council at an early date..
