The farmers who are protesting about falling incomes have also blockaded supermarkets and have stopped drivers entering to buy food.

Philip Judge and Alan Kendall, both trying to deliver chilled foods to Azerbaijan for Peter Gilder, are stuck near Patrai and have been told they may be there until Christmas. They had problems in the French blockades, were then stopped at the Brenner Pass by striking Austrian farmers and now have been caught in Greece.

"This has turned a four-week trip into eight weeks—if we are lucky. We're all pretty fed up," says Judge, who has been surviving on the food he carries for the former Soviet areas.
