Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

WIGAN-BASED Wincanton drivers working on the firm's Heinz contract have become the latest to benefit from a big pay rise in the run up to the Working Tune Directive (WTD).

The Heinz drivers will get an average increase of 20%. taking pay for day and night drivers to £24,000 and £26,000 a year respectively. They will also get an increase in holidays, from 22 days to 24.

Wincanton says the deal is designed to help retain drivers and avoid the higher costs of paying agency fees. Previous pay deals in other companies intended to take account of the WTD include a 36% increase for waste collection drivers at Biffa and a 35% rise for Co-op drivers.

Wincanton will negotiate its wage deals on a contract-by-contract basis because the different circumstances of each contract make a company-wide pay deal impracticable.

Peter Nichol, human resources director for the UK and Ireland, says: "We have got dozens and dozens of different wage deals because of different sectors and different anniversary dates, so we are picking them up as we go through. There is also the issue of widely differing deals for every sector from specialist petroleum drivers to multi-drop retail operations, and the difference between artic and rigid drivers."
