Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

SALES OF USED tipper trailers are receiving a boost from an unwelcome quarter —some hauliers are having to buy replacements because their trailers have been stolen.

"Apparently, they're often being broken up by the thieves and the alloy content sold for its scrap value," says Andrew Smith, MD of Harlington. Bedfordshire, tipper dealership Newton Commercials.

Derby and the surrounding area appears to be a particular hotbed of tipper trailer theft, he reports. "I know of six that have been taken in the past few months," he remarks.

He alleges that police forces around the country seem to be showing little interest in the crime, and he warns security measures taken by hauliers at their yards don't appear to be having much effect.

"The thieves simply wave at the cameras as they drive off," he says.
