Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Commercial Vehicle Auctions has seen a summer of strong exports,

late-year/high

spec tractors and some decent multi axle rigids.

Commercial Vehicle Auctions' Charlie Wright reports that bi-weekly sales at the six-acre Doncaster site are attracting over 300 vehicles and 100-plus trailers: more than half of them are finding new homes.

To get through so many lots CVA divides them into groups. For example.trucks likely to be exported, like MAN F2000s, are offered at a specified time. so overseas purchasers are all bidding together rather than missing stock while checking out the semis, grabbing a quick sandwich,or simply arriving too late.

Export favourites

Of 20 MAN F2000 tractors up for grabs at a recent sale,12 were shipped overseas. Other export favourites include 3-Series Scanias and Ivecos.

Many exporters convert them into left-hookers, so why don't they buy them on the Continent? "We can only assume the trucks are cheaper here," says Wright. "Identically aged tractors out of Germany are too expensive. By buying and converting from the UK they are still out in front."

Once the majority of these vehicles have gone through. CVA turns its attention to domestic and Irish trade buyers in the early afternoon, offering high-spec/ late-year stock.The past three sales have all included trucks that fetched more than £42,000.

These included a Daf 530 Super Spacecab and three latest generation Volvo Globetrotters (all provided by hauliers rather than snatch-backs or closures). Wright explains they had been used by drivers who have retired — the op erator decided to sell the trucks rather than replace the drivers.

Run-of-the-mill fleet-spec tractors have also been in demand, with 4x2 Daf 85s selling well into the 'to be stretched' market. "These have crept up in price," he adds. "Where they were fetching £8-9,000 it's now up to £10,500."

Late-model Mercedes-Benz Actroses are in short supply so when they do appear they sell well 1997-1999 Renault Premium 385 and 400 tractors have been strong performers on the export market.

In the multi-axle class, 8x4s have been fetching good money with seven post-1999 examples going under the hammer in recent weeks.That may not sound like a lot but there really aren't many around.They included three Fodens, several Volvo FM12s 11111~ and Scanias, and an 01-plated Daf CF that raised more than £30,000 (ex-VAT).

There's a shortage of recent 18-tonners, with 1994-1997 stock struggling to raise a smile. But an 02-plate Daf attracted lots of interest, showing that the right spec on a late-year plate will always have bidders reaching for their chequebooks.

Many trailers are being exported; among the older tandems and triaxles on springs to find homes overseas there have been some real gems.

SDC 2002-vintage trailers have been doing well and the most recent auction on 28 July featured a 2004 M&G triaxle curtainsider, alongside a 2002 Montracon skeletal and a 2001 Eurotrade Euroliner. •
