TO ABANDON ITS TRAMS AN assurance that the introduction of buses to replace the trams would not mean any increase in fares was given at the meeting of Halifax Town Council on August 3, when it was mia.nimously decided to endorse a recommendation of the passenger transport committee that the tramways system be abandoned, at the earliest convenient time.

• Alderman A. H. Gledhill, chairman of the transport committee, presenting a series of resolutions on the question, recalled that the policy of gradually abandoning tram routes had been steadily pursued for the past seven and a half years, and the time had arrived when consent should be sought for final abandonment at the earliest practicable moment.

Since 1931 the policy had been to spend money on renewing track where the expenditure was small in relation to capital debt, and to abandon routes where the cost of renewals was high. The difficulties of 1931 were accentuated by the fact that the corporation was also losing money on the buses £12,516—and with previous losses amounting to £10,629, there was a total loss of £23,145. It was compelled to abandon the trams owing to the high cost of the permanent way, but it was having to turn over to another form of transport which was not then making a profit. In 1932, however, the bus position was reversed, and there was a profit of £32,800.

Alderman Gledhill said the position to-day was favourable for a final abandonment of the tramways, because there was sufficient profit on the bus undertaking to pay for the increased capital charges occasioned by the addition to the fleet of buses necessary for handling the present tramways traffic. It could meet the whole of the tramways capital charges and show a handsome profit.

Alderman Gledhill gave an assurance that there would be no increase in bus fares in comparison with the present tram fares, hut rather would there be a tendency for reductions to be made where possible.
