M.O.T. AND THE CONTROL OF CAR TRAILERS.

Recently, the A.R.O. submitted a memorandum to the Minister of Transport on the subject of the drawing of trailers, behind private cars, which, amongst other points, stressed the element of danger present in cases where heavy loads are carried in this manner. The Association has now been informed that the Minister has decided to refer the question to the Transport Advisory Council, which has been asked " to examine the position arising out of the use of trailers drawn by vehicles constructed solely for the carriage of not more than seven passengers, exclusive of the driver, and their effects; and to consider whether it is desirable to amend in any respect the present law regarding these trailers."

"The Spectre of Monopoly."

An exceptional demand is indicated for copies of the B:R.F.'s new booklet, The Spectre of Monopoly, which presents the case for the road haulier. Besides the original distribution of 20,000 copies, nearly 7,000 further copies -have already been sent out in answer to specific requests. Many highly appreciative letters have been received concerning the booklet.

Work on Wages Boards Commences.

The Minister of Labour is now proceeding to establish the Road Haulage Central Wages Board for Great Britain, and Area Boards for Scotland and for each of the 10 Traffic Areas in England and Wales. The Central Board is empowered, after consultation with the Area Boards, to submit to the Minister of Labour proposals concerning the remuneration of the workers concerned; and the Minister is empowered to make an Order making the proposed wages and working conditions obligatory on all employers holding A or B licences.

The Area Boards are to be composed of equal numbers of representatives of tile employers and workers concerned in their respective areas, appointed by the Minister after consultation with organizations appearing to him to represent such employers and workers. The Central Board is to cqnsist of a small number of independent persons, 12 representatives of employers and workers respectively, appointed from among the members of the Area Boards, and a further number of representative members appointed after consultation with organizations.

For the purpose of these consultations, the Minister of. Labour will shortly communicate with all organizations of employers and workers which have already indicated a desire to be consulted. Any other organizations hiving members holding A and B licences, or any other organizations of workpeople employed on vehicles operating under such licences, which desire to be consulted, should inform the Secretary of the Ministry of Labour.

Solving "S. and B." Problems.

The A.R.O. has received several queries from its areas, where members have been experiencing difficulty with the new Sand and Ballast Regulations. A number of these has been submitted to the Board of Trade, and it is hoped that the answers received will go far towards elucidating obscure points and eliminating the difficulties. TRANSPORT RESTRICTION'S EFFECT ON BUSINESS.

The Brighton and District Area of the C.M.U.A. has arranged an open meeting, to be held at Holloway's, 57, High Street, Lewes (opposite the County Hall), on Monday, August 15, at 7.30 p.m. On this occasion, Mr. W. A. Winson, immediate past president of the C.M.U.A., will open a discussion on the effect of road-transport legislation upon business.

Forthcoming Association Function.

The annual dinner and dance of the London and Home Counties Division of the C.M.U.A. will be at the Park Lane Hotel, on Wednesday. November 2.

B.R.F. Poster Campaign.

A great deal of public interest has been aroused by the B.R.F. experimental poster and sandwich-board campaign, which was launched over August Bank Holiday week-end. " Shots " of the campaign were incorporated in the British Paramount news film" of road traffic congestion during the holiday, which was shown both in London and in the provinces. A photograph of one of the posters appeared in our issue for last week.
