A recent news sheet of the N.F.U. contains some interesting comments regarding the cleansing of livestock lorries.

Recently, in the House of Commons the Minister of Agriculture was asked for particulars of the procedure which should be adopted for this purpose. Mr. Morrison, in reply, stated that the cleansing and disinfection of vehicles used for the conveyance of animals by road are required by the Transit of Animals (Amendment) Order, 1932, made under Section 22 of the Diseases of Animals Act, 1894.

The process must be carried out by the owner or person using or in charge of the vehicle, as soon as practicable after each load has been discharged, and before any other animal, or fodder or litter intended for animals, is placed in the vehicle. Where a vehicle makes consecutive journeys between the same two points on the same day, the process may be carried out after the last of such journeys instead of between each.

The Order does not make it Compulsory to cleanse a vehicle . at a market unless arrangements have been made by the local authority for the provision of the necessary facilities, including a water supply. At a market where animals are being discharged, the person responsible must make his own arrangements for cleansing it elsewhere.

Excessive Loads in Cheshire.

Mr. Stacey Hallard, Chief Inspector of Weights and Measures in Cheshire, states, in his annual report; that during the year, 3,123 vehicles were stopped and, owing to the obvious light nature of the loads, 1,357 were allowed to proceed without being weighed. Of the remaining 1;766 weighed 366 were found to be overloaded, on axle weight and/or gress Weight. In 349 instanced aurnmonees were issued and a total of £355 l0. 6d. in fines and costs was imposed.

a2S New Aberdeen Bridge.

Reconstruction is to commence, in a few weeks, of Albert Street Bridge, Aberdeen, which is to carry, the new 90-ft. road from the heart of the city to the sea front. On March 11 we announced that The Commercial Motor would give a prize of five guineas for the best paper on road-transport operation, submitted during the present academic year, by a student making the maximum number of attendances at classes in this subject, held in connection with -the Royal Society of Arts examinations at any public, technical or commercial institute in Great Britain. We added, later, that the general stipulation regarding attendance would be reduced to 80 per cent, or less than this in cases where business exigencies were the cause of absence and a satisfactory certificate to this effect is produced by the student.

The closing date was originally July 31, but this has been extended to August 21.
