Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A MAN HAS been ordered to pay more than £2,700 in ines and costs for dumping 36 sacks of scallop shells into Brixham Harbour from his truck.

In an Environment Agency prosecution, Torbay Magistrates’ Court was told how Nicholas Norris – a driver, packer and buyer for local ish processing company Sefton – drove the lorry to the harbourside and started throwing the sacks of waste shells into the water in April 2011. His illegal activities were captured on CCTV and reported to the harbourmaster.

Norris admitted the offence, but said there was a tradition of disposing of ish offal and other ishing industry wastes in the harbour. He was also ordered to pay £870 compensation to the council to cover clean-up costs, plus a £15 victim surcharge. Magistrates said such activities were “unacceptable” and that the prosecution should serve as a warning to all ish processors to dispose of waste correctly and not dump it in areas like Brixham harbour.

Don’t pollute

The dumping was a deliberate act, carried out to avoid paying for proper disposal. Disposal of waste in a working harbour can cause pollution and damage boats.
