• J. C. Bamford (Excavators) the Staffordshire-based construction equipment manufacturer has joined the list of prospective buyers for the Land Rover division of BL although it is not interested in Leyland Trucks.

On Tuesday this week, JCB submitted a bid to the BL Board and a management team led by JCB chairman Anthony Bamford has visited the Solihull Land Rover site.

According to JCB's John Atkinson the two companies are "very compatible".

"JCB deals a lot with the military, local authorities and farmers, which is exactly the market for Land Rover."

The company currently has around 100 dealers in the UK and more significantly over 100 dealer outlets in the United States.
