Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Strong rumours this week suggest that diesel engine manufacturer L. Gardner and Son will be sold by Hawker Siddeley before the end of the month.

It has been known for some time that Hawker Siddeley is looking for a purchaser for Manchester-based Gardner.

Sources suggest the purchaser will be Perkins Engines, Britain's biggest diesel engine manufacturer.

Only two and a half years ago, Perkins' parent company, Massey Ferguson, bought Rolls-Royce Diesels for 220 million and merged Perkins and Rolls-Royce operations.

There will be some concern about the future of Gardner's Manchester plant, should Perkins purchase the company.
