SPIRITED reaction has been registered by the Traders' Road

Transport Association to proposed waiting restrictions, including the prohibition of loading and unloading, between 8.30 a.m. and 10 a.m. in a number of streets in London. Objections may be lodged before Easter, but the Association have asked the Ministry of Transport to extend by a month the period in which representations may be made.

"A severe shock not only to traders and shopkeepers, but also to the general public—particularly the housewife," was how the proposals were described by Mr. S. J. Lamborn, chairman of the London and Home CountiesDivision of the Association, at the division's annual meeting yesterday.

The Association had every sympathy with the Minister in trying to ease the flow of traffic into central London, but failed to understand why the trading community should be penalized for the benefit of through traffic.

Blow to Food Traders " It is most essential that we realize the full implications of these proposals. The effect on the food trades and the public will be detrimental," Mr. Lamborn warned. "Deliveries to shops of supplies of many foodstuffs and perishables from the London markets are at their peak during the proposed banned period.

`.` The housewife will find that she has • to delay the purchases of fresh foods she requires, and those responsible for supplying lunches for the workers in the City and the London boroughs will h, delayed in their start of prepara tion.'" .

• The bans would cause great inconvenience aid -add to the present heavy cost of living. "I would suggest that if inflation is to be curbed, reduction of transport costs is a good place to begin," Mr. Lamborn stated.

Banned Zones There follows a list of the boroughs and streets to which the proposed bans would apply. The London and Home Counties. Traffic Advisory Committee, who are considering amendments of the existing regulations, may be disposed to permit vehicles to wait in the streets concerned for the purpose of loading or unloading goods after 10 a.m.

NEW chairman of Gloucester Subarea of the Road Haulage Assocition is Mr. G. H. Gardner. Mr. R. L. Dance is vice-chairman and Mr. D. B. Evans, honorary secretary.

Mr. H. Pickthall has been elected chairman of West Cumberland Subarea, with Mr. H. B. Hcllon and Mr. F. Coates as vice-chairmen. Mr. R. H. Lindsay is honorary secretary.

NEW DEPUTY CHAIRMAN IT was announced on Wednesday that I Mr. L. M. Broadway had been elected deputy chairman of C. C. Wakefield and Co., Ltd. He will hold this office in conjunction with his position as managing director. He joined the board in 1947.
