Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Derbyshire County Council (DCC) has moved quickly to bring in measures to combat bridge bashing following an accident on the A616 bridge near Creswell two months ago in which four people died (CM 31 July-6 August).

Pressure from residents has sparked measures including overhead gantries with dangling chains. These will protect the A616 bridge near Creswell, where the crash occurred, and a bridge at Darfoulds on the A619.

Bridge height signs will be added to all advance signing around the Ml, A616 and A619 junctions. The 30mph limit will be extended to include the approach to the railway bridge in Creswell.

The crash on the A616 bridge at the end of July involved a truck working for Pontefractbased AJS Transport and a DCC minibus. Residents and drivers criticised the council for failing to signpost the bridge properly. Six incidents involving lorries are understood to have occurred there this year.

1: Rush-hour traffic was halted for two hours in Sheffield last week when a Walon car transporter (below) crashed into a railway bridge. No-one was hurt.
