Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• A Morrison Electricar battery-electric vehicle for payloads of around 4.5cwi has been announced by Croinpton Leyland Electricars Ltd. Van and pick-up versions are to be shown at Earls Court, the vehicle being called the Model Al and intended for city and urban deliveries of Light goods.

The Model A 1 has a robust frame fabricated from sqUare tube with a steel battery-support structure ahead of the rear wheels. Body and cab are of all-reinforced-plastics construction, In both van and pick-up versions, the cab front end, the scuttle and the cab floor are rigidly attached to the frame but the rest of the bodywork including the floor and cab roof (and the bulkhead of the pick-up) is hinged at the rear end. By raising the rear portion of the body, full access to the batteries and electrical equipment is given. The cab doors are hinged at the front end and can have sliding windows if required. At the front there are twin windscreens.

Electrical equipment is under the seat area and two series-wound motors drive the front wheels. Four I2V batteries joined in series are supplied and the design incorporates a built-in charger and carbon-stack controller. There is a half or "economy" speed stage for use in congested traffic conditions.

Suspension is independent all round with rubber-cone springs at the front and at the rear. The front stub axles are carried on unequal-length arms and there are trailing raclius arms at the rear. There is a pendant pedal for the Lockheed hydraulic brakes. Drum diameter is 7in. all round and the shoes are 1.25 in. wide. A lever-type handbrake operates mechanically on the rear wheels. Tyre size is 5.20-10 radial tyres being standard.

The built-in charger is designed to give full recharge of the batteries in about nine hr. A voltage/timer relay is incorporated to reduce the charge automatically when the "gassing" stage is reached. Three specifications of electrical equipment are quoted for the Model Al. The "low-speed" model gives a maximum speed of 25 mph and can run on the level non-stop unladen for 40 miles per charge. The "medium-speed" and "high-speed" give 28 mph /38 miles and 33 mph/35 miles respectively. The manufacturer quotes a useful working range for the design of about 25 miles per day.

The Model Al has a wheelbase of 4ft 3in. and an overall length of 8ft 6in. Overall width is 4ft 8.5in. and in the van the length of the load space is 4ft 6in., width is 3ft 10.25in. and the measurement from the floor to the roof is 311 4.5in. Turning circle is said to be 19ft 4in. and licensing weight less than 12cwt. Kerb weight is 17cwt for the pick-up and 17.25cwt for the van. Both are plated for a maximum gross weight of 1.19 tons.
