Merlin Spaco Engineering Ltd (stand 171) will exhibit for the first time its latest fuel pump test beds which have been specifically designed for the distributor-type fuel pumps. A feature of these units is that the operator sits at the bench and so a bulkhead separates the paperwork from the oily side of the operation. The new Kompact series of machines, available for up to eight cylinder pumps with a 5 hp drive-motor and 12 cylinder pumps with the 7.5 hp drivemotor, will also be shown.

Vehicle cleaning, both for visual reasons and in order to be able to present vehicles for MoT testing. has jumped to a new prominence in the past couple of years. While wages have risen and drivers' hours regulations have reduced the length of time men are available, cleaning can now be speeded by the installation of any of a

number of automatic washing machines. One new machine is to be exhibited by Wilcomatic Ltd (stand 162) and another by Emanuel (Garage Equipment) Ltd (stand 148) both arc brush-type washers. the Wilcomatic unit being suitable for light vans and cars which, it is claimed, can be washed and waxed in three minutes.

Emanuel is showing for the first time the Tunnel Transport commercial vehicle washing machines; these units have the washing brushes mounted vertically and situated diagonally along the track of the washing bay. The carriers for the brushes can be either fixed or inclined to suit bodies of unusual shape.

An attachment for brush washing machines made by AVW Equipment Ltd (stand 173) is a drier. This unit, the Cadet, is designed to operate with the firm's Cadet

range of washing machines which take up very little space.

At least three new units for chassis cleaning will be on show. Wickham Industrial Equipment Ltd (stand 147) will display two new units, one an automatic under-body washer, the other an all-in-one cold, hot water and steam cleaning unit.

Another multi-purpose unit—the Vestin —will be shown by Modern Devices Ltd (stand 168). It is claimed that it can tackle any type of cleaning job. It will provide saturated steam, high-pressure lowtemperature steam, and hot and cold high-pressure water. The Vestin is fully portable and equipped with quick-change nozzles.

Winter will all too soon be here and with it will come the usual starting problems. Most of the rapid chargers on the market are expensive but a new unit—the Rapid Charger—to be shown by A. C. Withnell Ltd (stand 151), costs only £32 10. It embodies a charging rate of up to 30amp, is protected against overload and can charge at 6V, 12V and 24V; an automatic control reduces the charging rate as the battery voltage increases and the unit can be used to start a vehicle having a flat battery. It weighs 351lb and an be supplied with a trolley pack to make it easily portable.

Batteries, of course, must be supplied with distilled water and the standard method of storing this material wastes considerable space. Elgastat Accessories Ltd (stand 174) will be exhibiting a new version of its distilled water dispenser known as the Elgastat 2000. Available for purchase or rental, it uses replaceable cartridges and is operated by electricity. It is claimed to produce distilled water for less than 7d per gallon. Fitters working on vehicle running gee and brakes can operate more easily whe the vehicle is at a convenient height off th ground. Not only can a man then appl more purchase on the heavier spanners an wrenches he must use, but he can work fo longer periods without tiring. Josepl Bradbury and Sons Ltd (stand 161) will b showing the latest version of th Dockmaster vehicle lifts. This recentl introduced 5-ton capacity unit will featur the patented wheel-free system which allow the running gear to be left free to rotat while the vehicle is supported by the axles.

Another new lifting device, to be show. by Tecalemit (Engineering) Ltd (stand 163: is a pneumatic powered side-lift floor jack Tecalemit has also brought out a new o drain trolley for small fleets. This will have capacity of 20gal of waste oil and feature an anti-splash grille-top.

recently introduced on /off row tyre-retreading mould, the 006, and whil there also watch the Kentredder plant ii operation.

Turning to hand tools for a moment, Joh Bedford and Son Ltd (stand 150), at th, Show for the first time, among a full rang, will feature a very nice 0.5in, square-driv, fine-tooth ratchet employing a load-fre nylon ratchet-pawl. The trade name of th, tool is the Parkhill.

As vehicle speeds have increased so ha the need for correctly balanced wheel am tyre equipment grown. Two nev commercial vehicle wheel-balancers will la, on display, one by Kismet Ltd of Bedford the other by Hofmann Balancini Techniques Ltd, the UK subsidiary of Gebr Hofmann KG of Darmstadt, Wes Germany. The Kismet unit, the KWB1144 will handle wheels of 16in. diameter up tt 12.00 X 20 and is claimed to be accurst' iown to 0.05 per cent of the total wheel weight. Scales on the machine show the amount .of imbalance and at what point on the wheel the weight must be added. z•omplementary to the balancer is a hydraulic wheel-lift which permits one man working alone to handle the heaviest wheels on and off the machine.

Hofmann's unit, the ER 1300, reads the imbalance electronically and will accept wheels of I8in. and over. A hoist can be supplied for handling wheels on and off. The machine can also be used for balancing hub units and brake drums.

Staying with wheels and tyres, Pang Chemical Vulcanizers Ltd (stand 179) will be showing an Italian-made commercial vehicle tyre-changing machine which it is to market in the UK. The tyre-changer is powered by electro-pneumatics, develops a thrust of 15 tons through a stroke of 17.7in., and is supplied with nine dials of various diameters. It will handle rim sizes up to 32in.

Apaseal Ltd (stand 167) will feature an addition to its well-known Seed tyre stand —the Secel safety cage. The unit screws into the centre of the stand, covering the rim of the wheel and adequately protecting the operative should the rim blow off while the tyre is being inflated. It is portable and can be used on roadside tyre-fitting jobs.

Crash repair work on light vans and other pressed-steel-bodied vehicles is eased with the introduction by the ARO Machinery Co Ltd (stand 178) of its N179 portable resistance (spot) welding gun specially developed for working on commercial vehicles.

Two recently introduced items will be shown by Hartridge Test Equipment (stand 159). The first, for use with cars and light vans, is a shock-damper tester which utilizes the weight of the vehicle to produce the energy needed to test the dampers, and the other the Injectomatic One, a development of the Injectomatic Six introduced at the last Show. As its name suggests, it comprises a single unit—from the six-headed machine—its function being to recondition and re-seat injector nozzles.
