Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

SI-IOCK after shock is being experienced by those whose business—We will not speak of pleasure in.these days —has hitherto called for a considerable amount of travel by road. Whilst greatly regretting these further moves, we cannot lodge any strong protest against them, provided, that they be instituted solely to save fuel and rubber.

After September 29 the Green Line coach services of London Transport are to be withdrawn, but an ameliorating point is the promise that they will be replaced where necessary by the strengthening, or extension of existing bus services to act as feeders to "

convenient" railway stations or other interchange points. Other longdistance coach services, including the few still running to London, will, be discontinued, except that portions of some of the routes may be retained where it is necessary to serve rural areas which would' otherwise he isolated. Already there is a consider

able amount of dissatisfaction in respect of this matter of isolation, and .the subject is really deserving of special inquiry. Many train services are already so congested that' it is difficult for workers and business men to travel to their centres of occupation, whilst it is now almost impossible to find accommodation at reasonable figures in such centres. The Metropolitan area is an example of this. The Government's suggestion is that we must localize our activities. This is all very well as regards, say, shopping, where shops are available at a reasonable distance, but the need for travelling is by no means confined to this.

In addition, ordinary cheap day tickets and return tickets now issued in some districts at fares less than the monthly rate will be withdrawn from October 5. This will mean a big increase in the cost of travelling for many people
