Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

TUST issued by the Road -Haulage jCentral Wages Board is R.II.11,

which contains the latest proposals for higher wages for road-haulage workers, to which reference was made in our issue dated August 21. Any objections to the proposals have to be laid before the Board before September 22. The proposals include the raising of the basic subsistence allowance from 7s. to 9s., whilst certain localities are to be up-graded for wages purposes.

Further notice will be given if and when the proposed minimum rates set out in R.H.11 are confirmed.

DORMAN'S HIGHER PROFIT

Ithe year ended March 31 last, W. H. Dorman and Co., Ltd., made a profit of £165,813, compared with £145,504 in the previous year. The net profit, after meeting depreciation, interest, etc., was £78,495 contrasted with £67,703 a year earlier. General reserve receives £7,000 and taxation reserve £52,500, whilst an ordinary dividend of 16f per cent, is to be paid, leaving £7,424 to carry forward.

HENRY SPURRIER MEMORIAL EXCEEDS £13,000 VUE have been notified by Mr. E. L. W Cadwallader, the hon. secretary of the Henry Spurrier Memorial Fund, that the total has now passed the £13,000 mark and is still rising. The trust deed by which the Fund comes under the mgis of the Institute of Transport will be handed to the Council of the, Institute at a function in London on September 15.

STILL GIVING GOOD GAS SERVICE

UNDETERRED by the uncertainty that exists as to the prospects of alternative fuels, Hyde Park Garage Ltd., 67, Bayswater Road, London, W.2, is maintaining its full service facilities for all types of low-pressure town-gas equipment and producer-gas plant.

This concern was one of the first, in the present era, to develop the former system, and has played an active part, since the early days of the war, in helping to render road transport less dependent upon imported fuel.

NOTES ON THE GOVERNMENT ROAD HAULAGE SCHEME

Supplied by the Ministry of War Transport and the Hauliers' National Traffic Pool, to keep the Industry informed of developments, but not necessarily to be regarded as official pronouncements.

Endorsement of Invoices. — The Ministry is still having to return a considerable number of invoices for fuller particulars about insurance. Many of the invoices come from operators who have effected their motor insurance through Lloyd's, and who simply endorse their invoices " Lloyd's Policies." The Ministry wishes to make it clear that this endorsement is not sufficient. The name of the syndicate underwriting the policy must be shown, together with the policy number.

Cargo.—The general cargo and meat moved in the week ended August 21 amounted to 163,829 tons. This is_.an increase of nearly 3,000 tons on the previous week.

Defence Lines. — The number of vehicles enrolled in the week ended August 22 was 734. Included in this total were 131 from North Eastern, 124 from North Western, 121 from Northern and 117 from Eastern. The grand total' now stands at nearly 41,700.

PERSONAL PARS

MR. R. E. BRITTON, of Hull, chairman of A.R.O.'s Yorkshire Area, was taken suddenly ill a short time ago, but we are glad to report that he is now making satisfactory progress towards recovery.

MR. H. BELL THOMPSON celebrates, in 1942, his 50th year With Sternol, Ltd., of which concern he is managing director, and to mark his golden jubilee a presentation is being made to him by the company. He is a past president of the National Oil and Grease Federation, and is a member of the London and Home Counties Committee of the War-time Oil Distributors' Emergency Council. He has, for many years, represented the lubricating-oil trade on the Grand Council of the Federation of British Industries.

BUS BOARD PROPOSED IN MONMOUTHSHIRE

'THE urban district council of Bedwas and Machen, Monmouthshire, has adopted a proposal that a statutory bus board be formed of the Bedwas and Machen, Caerphilly and Gelligaer urban district councils to take over the trans:, port undertakings of the three councils. A joint committee representing the three authorities has been formed for the purpose of preparing a Bill to be submitted to Parliament.

£100 FINE FOR OVERCHARGING FOR LEEK TRANSPORT

RECENTLY, David Lowe and Sons, Ltd., Stoneyhill, Musselburgh, was fined £100 in Glasgow Sheriff Court for overcharging on the transport of home-grown leeks to Glasgow Fruit Market. In all, there were, it was alleged, 41 offences under the HomeGrown Leeks (Maximum Prices) Order, 1941, against the company. Three other firms who acted as selling agents were fined sums ranging from £1 to £5.

David Lowe and Sons, Ltd., was stated to have charged 5s. 10d, per cwt. for the transport of the leeks which was in excess of the maximum allowance under the Order.
