HELPING ROAD CAFE PROPRIETORS

.1-1. A USEFUL little brochure which

should prove of value to café proprietors has been issued by the British Road Federation,. 50, Pall Mall. London, S.W.1. It concerns rationing procedure for such cafés, refers to the four officials in eaah area who will advise on food problems, and suggests how a higher scale of rations may be obtained when 60 per cent. or more of the customers are road-transport drivers or marital workers_ Advice on obtaining deferment from the Services is also given SIRFREDERICK HEATON'S REPORT ON HAULAGE SCHEME IT is unofficially stated that Sir John

Frederick Heaton has already furnished to the Minister of 'War Transport a report on investigations Which the Minister asked him to make into the operation of the Government road haulage scheme. He is stated to have reported to the Minister about a week after he began his inquiries.

If Sir Frederick has already arriled at hiq conclusions—he is said to have put certain findings before the Minister —this will upset calculations in quarters where a general opportunity for operators' organizations to submit evidence and opinions was looked for.

DEMAND FOR RELICENSING PLEDGE •

THE Monthly Bulletin of Information issued by the B.R.F. carries a powerful leader demanding that a pledge be given on " Bight of Re-entry " to all licences existing at the outbreak of war. It also asks for more elasticity in the existing licensingsystem, so as to render all available vehicles ready for immediate use a.n.d allow them to be employed in rotation in order to have them all fit. As is' well known, the present system means an individual licence per vehicle, and if it be off the road the licence is wasted.

Previous attempts to obtain the first-mentioned concession have failed, the official reason being that an existing Government cannot control the policy of successive Governments. On the other hand, some form of pledge would, we hope, be honoured in the future.
