Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

By Chris Tindall THE DEPARTMENT for Transport (DfT) has renewed its commitment to review the speed limit for LGVs on major trunk roads as a petition calling for a change to the law attracts hundreds of signatures.

In November last year, the government set out its plans for improving the logistics sector’s productivity and facilitating conditions for growth in a document entitled The Logistics Growth Review. It said the measures would create an “efficient, competitive and low carbon logistics sector”.

They included launching a consultation to test public opinion about increasing the speed limit on A-roads for lorries.

A DfT spokesman said: “The government has made a commitment to consult on the speed limit for LGVs over 7.5 tonnes on single carriageway roads during 2012.” Meanwhile, an LGV drivers’ petition demanding the law is changed has attracted more than 300 signatures, just one month after it was created.

LGV driver Matt Downie said the 40mph speed limit caused “unbelievable frustration” for other motorists (CM 27 September).

• The DfT is pressing ahead with a review of motorway speed limits for cars and vans despite the transport secretary hinting he was against the idea. “The DfT is working on an impact assessment of 80mph speed limit on sections of the motorway network with variable speed limits, and considering the criteria for where the 80mph limit might be applied,” said a spokesman. “We are aiming to consult on this later in the year.”
