Swain looks to new markets after LV buy

SWAIN GROUP has bought fellow Kent haulier LV Transport, which operates about 20 vehicles and 30 trailers out of Gravesend and employs 25 staff, after the latter’s MD decided to retire.
Swain boss Bob Swain said the purchase of the general haulier provided it with a new customer base and the opportunity to operate in different markets. He said his youngest son Andrew will run the business from its Norfolk Road operating centre. “It’s a bit of continuity and a good opportunity for him to sell the Swain mark,” said Swain. He added that he hoped all staff would remain with the firm, although the future of the depot is under review.
LV Transport MD Len Valsler had been eyeing up his options as his retirement approached and Swain said he would remain with the company for three months.
“He had three options: someone to take it over, but he has no family who wanted to come in; sell it; or close it down,” he added.
“He has built it up over the years and we knew him. It had been a developing scenario; a couple of times he wanted to do it and then he changed his mind. Len and I think it’s the right thing for LV, the right thing for the customers and the right thing for the staff.” Swain declined to say how much he paid for the assets, business and employees.
