Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

SAF-HOLLAND’S UK distributor IMS expects to have the first new weight-saving SAF 80 One trailer axles in the UK by the end of the year.

The axles are SAF’s usual disc-braked axles but feature innovative new ‘80 One’ wheel-ends that have no hub flange – the wheel is bolted directly to the wheel-bearing housing, which saves weight. The idea was originally seen at the IAA Hannover Show in 2010, when it was called the 60 One. The new 80 One name reflects the fact that the wheel off-set has changed from 60mm to 80mm. The concept requires custom-made wheels, with a thicker nave off-set from the centreline by 80mm instead of the usual zero or 120mm.

IMS sales and marketing manager Arran Leatherland said progress of the concept had been stymied by the lack of aluminium wheels to suit the 80 One wheel-end. “Its purpose is to save weight, so operators who are interested in that naturally want aluminium wheels as well,” he said.

These are now available, with Alcoa introducing 11.75in-wide rims in an 80 One pattern to suit 385/65 R 22.5 trailer tyres last month. There is also a new 80 One wheel from Alex Rims, made in Taiwan and distributed in the UK by IMS.

The combination of the 80 One wheelends and aluminium wheels is likely to cut 160kg-180kg off the weight of a tri-axle trailer.

“We’ve already had interest in the 80 One concept from the petroleum regulation tanker industry and from bulk tipper operators,” said Leatherland last week at Commercial Motor Live.

“We should have the first ones in the UK by [the end of the year].”
