VDO UNVEILED a new version of its popular DTCO 1381 digital tachograph, which incorporates a countdown feature telling the driver exactly how much driving time he has left before he must take a break or daily rest, at Commercial Motor Live last week.

DTCO 1381 Release 2 supersedes Release 1.4, introduced a year ago. The latter included software for the so-called “one-minute rule” , the new interpretation of the drivers’ hours regulations that handles the rounding up of parts of a minute of driving time.

Release 2 also accommodates the one-minute rule, but adds the option of the drivers’ hours counter. The tachograph can display how much more driving time remains and how long the next break needs to be. During the break, it counts down the time remaining before driving can resume. It can also display daily, weekly and fortnightly driving and rest data. VDO said its new tacho makes a real contribution to productivity, by not only using the extra time created by the one-minute rule but also ensuring the driver can manage breaks and rests while still adhering to regulations.

In a promotion running for the rest of the year, VDO will upgrade existing DTCO tachographs, installing and calibrating the new Release 2.0 head (including the driver’s counter option) for £450.
