model for carrying long steel and similar loads on both sides of a centrally located cab.

New UNIC normal-use chassis are 19and 21-ton tractive units—the T8 MC and T9 MC respectively—and rigid versions which have a suffix P instead of T. The P8 MC is for 10.99 tons gross and the P9, 12.8 tons and while these additions to the Vosges range have a similar specification to earlier chassis in the range they have an OM 7A-litre, 160 bhp-gross diesel engine. The chassis have a five-speed synchromesh gearbox and a new tilt cab which will be used on the whole Vosges range.

Among the changes to the lzoard maximum-gross chassis from UNIC are better interior fittings in the cab. And in the case of OM chassis displayed by Fiat and UNIC there are two new lightweight designs—the OM 20 and OM 24 for 4.4 and 5.2 tons gross respectively. These have an 80 bhpgross four-cylinder diesel and supplement the existing OM medium-range which goes from 5.99 to 8 tons.

SAVIEM is making a big splash at Paris with its new heavy-weight chassis resulting from the agreement with MAN. Major components are manufactured by MAN but the cabs for both MAN and SAVIEM models are produced by the French company. There are detailed differences in the cab as marketed by each firm, the SAVIEM being more luxurious, having small opening windows above the drop windows in each door and an extra mirror on the nearside. Engines and major units are the same, although the French company follows the French practice of quoting output to the SAE rating which gives the highest possible figure and in the case of the V8 280 bhp is quoted as against the 250 bhp quoted by MAN which works to DIN standards.

Other news from SAVIEM is that the Super Goelette and the Super Galion have new engines—a 78 bhp petrol or 92 bhp diesel—and the front-wheel-drive Traffic van which is suitable for loads of 2 tons and was developed jointly by SAVIEM and Alfa Romeo of Italy is now being offered without its standard metal bodywork so that special designs can be built on to the front end/ platform. Changes also have been made to the SAVIEM "medium" range with the introduction of the S05 which combines features of the Super Galion and the previous S5B. It has a tilt cab and although independent front suspension is retained from the Super Galion, leaf instead of coil springs are used at the rear. The S5B becomes the SM5 with the tilt cab and like the SG5 it has a five-speed gearbox but there is a 92 bhp engine instead of a 78 bhp power unit and it is designed for 8 tons gross instead of 7.3 tons.

There has also been a change in the SAVIEM "heavy" range which is based on MAN components. The SMIO replaces the
