IN a reserved decision the Scottish I Traffic Commissioners have now approved an application by Glasgow Corporation for increased bus fares, with one exception, The maximum fare for 11 stages and over will be increased from 10d. to 11d, instead of Is. as proposed. The proposal to withdraw the 12-journey weekly ticket was rejected, but the cost of the ticket will be raised from Ss. to 9s.

Other changes were: the 3d. adult fare is retained, the 5d. fare is increased to 6d. and the 7d., 8d. and 9d. fares are increased by 2d. The Saturday ld. surcharge had produced £55,000 less in the time it was in operation than had been estimated and will be levied for the last time this week, and on Sunday new fares will come into operation for travel on night-service buses as well as on the ordinary services.

The cost of a s:ngle ticket on the night service will be increased from Is. to Is. 6d. and the weekly ticket from 4s, to 5s., instead of the proposed Gs.

The increased fares will raise an approximate additional £850,000 a year, which is £6,000 less than the estimated deficit for 1963-64. The fares structure proposed by the transport committee was estimated to raise an additional £900,000 a year.

At the hearing last week an objectionwas lodged by Clydebank Town Council, which contended that the increases were unnecessary and unjustified, and representations were heard on behalf

of various local tenants' associations,

Mr. E. R. L. Fitzpayne, general manager of the transport department, said in evidence that the Saturday Id. surcharge had produced £55,000 less in the time it was in operation • than had been estimated, The deficit for the current year on the present fares structure, would he about £856,000.
