QUS and rail fares and freight charges LI are to be increased in Northern Ireland on October 28, the Ulster Transport Authority announced last week.
Passenger fares will go up by between Id. and 4d. and freight charges will be raised by 10 per cent.
The Authority said it had been forced to make these increases because of rising costs—mainly due to higher wages, which amount to about £500,000 a year since the last revision of rates and fares in June, 1962.
The increases brought immediate criticisms from trade organizations. The Belfast Chamber of Trade warned that the freight charges would ultimately be passed on to the consumers, whilst the National Union of Small Shopkeepers described the increases as "Yet another example of an organization with no competition getting out of hand ".
Deficit on the U.T.A rail services last year was 1.457,777. whilst road services showed a loss (145.172) for the first time.
