THIS ISSUE WAS being printed when our demonstration of coal-gas-driven vehicles was taking place at the garage of John I. Thornycroft and Co., Ltd., Pulford Street, Grosvenor Road, S.W. While we intend to deal fully with the subject ha our next issue, we may remark that few recent events in the motcring world have aroused such widespread interest.

It is a matter of pleasant satisfaction to Tile Costminima MOTOR to record that our campaign in favour of this petrol substitute has borne such tangible fruit. Especially satisfactory is it to learn that this demonstration aroused the keen interest of the authorities, whose one object at the moment is to save every pint of petrol possible. Among those to whom invitations were issued, by request, may be mentioned Lieut.-Col. R. E. Bagnall-Wild, R.E., Chief Inspector of Aircraft Construction ; N. F. B. Osborn, Esq., Deputy Director of Army Contracts ; E. Houghton Fry, Esq., Director of Munitions Petroleum Supplies; • T. C. A. Coventry, Esq., Deputy Director Munitions Railway Transport ; Brig.-Gen. A. R. Crofton Atkins C.B., Director of Supplies and Transport ; M. M. Wailer, Esq., Direc tor of 8 ores, Admiralty ; W. C. E. Wood roffe, Esq., Ministry of Food ; Colonel the Hon. C. James, Motor Transpo t Committee ; while the PetroleiMe Executive was rep esented by its Executive Officer, Mr. Frederick Tho esby. We may also remark that the department of the Chief Commissioner of Police was represente by a number of gentlemen who are keenly alive to e new development. Several hundred applications f r tickets were received from municipal and private i terests in all parts of the country, conch.sively pr ving that " Coal-gas as a Motor Fuel" has caught o . It has emerged from the chrysalis stage of experi ental investigation to the hard-headed-commercial realm of practical application: We desire to extend our thanks to the many firms and owners who assisted in rendering the demonstration successful by the loan of their gas-driven vehicles, many of which were sent from great distances ; to John 1. Thornycroft and Co., Ltd., for the loan ef their garage in which to accommodate the vehicles and to the many officials of Government departments who expressed their intention to investigate the possibilities of this fuel under everyday operating conditions.
