Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

REPORTS FROM within US engine giant Cummins indicate that plans to upgrade its 10.8-litre 1SMe engine to the Euro-4 standard by making use of SCR after-treatment have been shelved.

If confirmed this means from October 2006 the well-regarded Cummins option will no longer be available in the ERF ECT, the heavy-duty Foden Alpha nor Seddon Atkinson chassis.

In the absence of an alternative ERF tractors are likely to become merely rebadged MAN TGAs, powered by the German company's new-generation D20 engines.

Seddon heavies are on course to become exclusively Iveco Cursor powered, and don't be surprised if a Daf engine is offered alongside the Caterpillar lumps in Foden Alpha tractors and eight-wheelers. However, Caterpillar's C13 plans for Euro-4 Fodens are by no means certain; there are known to be problems installing the ACERT engine with its top-mounted twin turbos, under the Alpha cab.

Cummins' decision to phase out the ISMe is thought to be driven by its dwindling share of the European heavy market — now barely 1,500 units a year — which cannot justify the huge R&D and production cost of the SCR programme.

A Cummins spokesman does not deny this is part of the engine maker's plans, adding: "Cummins does not comment on future product developments which would reveal technically confidential information to competitors or reflect on any potential supply agreements with OEM customers. Our intent is to release Euro-4 engine information at the Birmingham CV show in April 2005."
