CONTINENTAL TYRES' ContibreakdownService (CBS) is hitting an average downtime target of less than two hours for trucks requiring emergency roadside tyre assistance, according to its latest figures.

Continental Truck Tyres' UK business director Arthur Gregg adds: "According to our records 13% of HGVs suffer a tyre breakdown during the course of a year, almost a third of which occur out side normal service hours.With the EuroService card fleets can have fast, reliable local breakdown assistance 24 hours a day every day of the year."

CBS is a fixed-price service with drivers calling a local number and speaking to an operator in his or her own language.

• Rival tyre firm Michelin has developed what it calls a "maintenance-free, airless tyre". Designed for vehicles up to 7.5 tonnes, it's currently under development for the mass market.

Key to the design is "an advanced radial structure manufactured from high-performance composite materials" onto which a rubber tread is bonded.

Once the tread wears down it can be removed and a new tread bonded to the core structure.
