Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

REPORTS of seven tests made in normal service with a MorrisCommercial 30-cwt. lorry, powered by a 15.9 h,p. engine and running on town gas contained in a 250-cubic-ft. bag, have reached us from P. Winn (Barking), Ltd . , Barking.

From an analysis of the figures and observations submitted to us we deduce that the average consumption rate was 16.8 miles per 250 cubic ft. of gas— the equivalent of one gallon of petrol.

The load carried varied from nothing to 2 tons, the corresponding maximum speeds being 30 m.p.h. and 25 m.p.h. From three journeys on which loads ranging from 1-2 tons were carried the consumption rate averaged 26.2 payload ton-miles per gallon equivalent.

Among general observations relating to these tests may be included the marked effects of head and following winds, as would be expected, and the good pulling on hills, a manifestation of the flexibility recognized as a gas characteristic. To combat wind resistance, future installations will have gasbag containers with slotted fronts so that the frontal area diminishes as the bag deflates.

A description of this concern's towngas activities, in which it is associated with Grant and West, Ltd., appeared in our issue dated October 14.
