'unreasonable shop steward'

• Three brothers who operate a family haulage business at Kingsley, near Cheadle, Staffs, have threatened to close down the firm next month rather than deal with a shop steward who they say is unreasonable.

The brothers, Roy, Eric and Trevor Tideswell, who run H. Tideswell and Sons, claim that the shop steward, Mr Colin Clacker, is just not prepared to see reason, although they are not ready at present to make further comment. Already the firm has claimed a rebate on its road fund licences.

Last week the 17 vehicles operated by the company were standing loaded as some of the 15 drivers employed by Tideswell and Sons picketed the firm's depot.

A spokesman for the firm said that the dispute started after a shop steward for the TGWU left and was replaced by Mr Clacker.

Mr Clacker, who has been driving 20 years for the firm said: "I am the new shop steward and the boys will never go back until the brothers accept me.He added that he had been chosen as shop steward because — through his experience — he was the only driver who could put forward a reasonable opinion and stand by it.
