• National Travel, the National Bus Company's subsidiary, seems likely to be beaten to the post in the race to develop Continental express services by an independent Scottish operator. Rennie's Lion and Comfort Coaches Ltd of Dunfermline has applied for a licence for express services between Glasgow and Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Paris and Brussels. National Travel is currently planning a London-Frankfurt service.
Mr John Rennie, a director of Rennie's, told CM this week that he had received a thick dossier of objections from, among others, British Rail, NBC, Scottish Bus Group and various leading independents. However, he said that the company hopes to continue its bid to operate weekly services during the summer from Glasgow. Two coaches would be used, one serving Paris and Brussels and the other Amsterdam and Frankfurt. Both would use the Hull-Rotterdam ferry link and fares would include a berth and meals_ Cold meals, picked up in Dunfermline and on board ship, would be served. Single fares Glasgow—Frankfurt would be £21.70 and Glasgow-Amsterdam £17.20. It was hoped to use the company's latest coach, a Leyland Leopard with Van fool executive bodywork_ A date for hearing the application has yet to be fixed but the service is unlikely to begin this season. It would operate in the summer months, between June and September. Asked why the company wanted to run the services Mr Rennie said: "We have had many inquiries from the public."
