transport of dangerous goods by tankers and the carriage of cylinders.

The Transportable Pressure Equipment Directive (TPED) was discussed last month by the Transport Committee. -It's a technical report that reviews and revises EU law to bring it into line with UN law, such as the ADR rules," says Brian Simpson, chair of the Transport Committee. It aims to simplify some procedures and clarify the definition of "transportable pressure equipment".

If introduced, the directive will replace Directive 1999/36/EC on transportable pressure equipment and related directives. The EC has put forward the proposal and says it will not entail substantial changes to existing law.

Simpson adds: "Its most important objective is to remove inconsistencies by bringing technica, requirements in line with international rules on the transport of dangerous goods."

The Council of Ministers Working Group has added an amendment which, if accepted, would give member states the right to limit or prohibit the use of equipment that presents a safety risk.
