THE FREIGHT TRANSPORT Association (FTA) has branded the Liberal Democrats "naive and misguidedafter the party published a report calling for supermarkets to cut HGV mileage and increase delivered units per trip.

The report How Green is Your Supermarket? surveyed nine of the UK's top supermarket chains. It estimates that the stores' trucks travel 670 million miles a year the equivalent, it says, of going to the moon and back 723 times. It claims their trucks were running "between 60 and 92% full".

But the FTA says UK supermarkets lead the world in the effi ciency of their logistics operati and have removed empty runt as far as possible.The FTA's G( Dossetter, says: "The whole po lation relies on the supermarl and others to deliver goods stores all over the country v the maximum of efficiency and minimum of cost."
