THE UNCERTAINTY over whether digital tachographs had to be fitted from this August has finally been resolved after it became clear the industry could not meet the deadline.

Transport minister David Jamieson has announced that the EU regulations will not be forced upon operators in the UK when they become operative in five months' time. Instead, vehicles used within the scope of EU drivers' hours rules must be fitted with either analogue tachographs or the new generation of digital tachographs between 5 August and a new date.

Jamieson says the UK will con:inue to work with the European Commission and other member states to agree this new date for fitting new vehicles with digital smart-card tachographs The Freight Transport Association describes the announcement as "...common sense, since no such units are presently available nor likely to be available until June 2005 at the earliest!"
