A LONDON van driver has been ordered to pay fines and costs totalling £1,250 for driving a vehicle that was severely overloaded.

Benjamin Acheampong, of Windlass Place, De ptford,pleaded guilty before the Hillingdon magistrates to two offences of exceeding axle weights, one of exceeding the permitted gross weight and one of using a severely overloaded vehicle.

He was fined £150 on each offence and ordered to pay £650 prosecution costs.

Anthony Ostrin, prosecuting for the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA), told the court Acheampong was driving his light van when he became the subject of an organised road check.

The first axle was found to be 26.5% overweight. his second axle was found to be 26.5% overweight and the permitted gross weight was exceeded by 48.2%.

"This vehicle was so overweight," said Ostrin,"that the additional offence of driving a vehicle that was severely overloaded has been brought against tIn defendant." For Acheampong,DavidThomas said h had not known the vehicle was overweight.

In fining Acheampong, the chairman of the magis trates told him he was so overweight that it had beel very dangerous both for himself and for other row users.
