YORKSHIRE HAULIER Wrights Ransport is closing with the loss of 50 jobs following the retirement of its boss.

Driver recruitment difficulties are partly blamed for 60-year old Graham Wright's decision to close the Goole-based business which he has run for 40 years.

James Wright. his son and the company's accounts director, says the 33 drivers were earning about f20,000-a-year for a 60hour week.

"It was not competing with what other, more specialist hauliers could offer," he adds."Up until five years ago we were in general haulage and then we switched to container haulage where margins are really quite tight."

He says that Wrights worked exclusively for shipping line Geest and although not short of drivers, turnover was high so enforcing standards became difficult.

"It was just difficult to see any future," Wright explains. "Everyone who wanted one has got anotherjob. It's a win-win situation for everybody. The drivers have newer trucks and earn more."

He adds that the company's four-acre site will be rented out. An auction of nearly 70 tractors and trailers will be held on Saturday (13 March) at Wrights' premises in Anderson Road. HALDEX HAS JOINED a major European-funded project to apply 'drive-by-wire' technology to improve the safety and efficiency of HGVs.

The €14.2m project, which has the acronym SPARC (Secure Propulsion using Advanced Redundant Control) is led by DaimlerChrysler, but also includes Continental tyres, Kogel trailers, Michelin, Siemens, Fiat, SKF and rival brake specialist Knorr-Bremse.

All the partners will provide x-by-wire technology to the project, including steer-by-wire, brake-by-wire and so on,with Haldex contributing its EMB — electro mechanical braking system whic is currently under development.

The state-of-the art EMB tect nology uses electronics to actual the brakes at the wheel. This n( only allows for more tailore braking, it also removes the nee for an air system, saving weigl and potentially fuel without suc a large compressor.

On a visit to the Haldex provin ground in northern Sweden la week, CM had the opportunit to witness the new system. A weren't allowed to get too dos to the secret new brakes (not di. before 2010), seeing a truck sto with full ABS but no air noit showed the system's potential.
