Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Sales of trucks and artics rose 10.7% to 2,585 last month compared with February 1992, the eighth monthly increase in a row. According to figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, Iveco Ford and Mercedes-Benz overtook Leyland Daf in the sales league.

The Anglo-Dutch manufacturer, which has been hit by a loss of confidence since calling in the receiver early in the month, saw registrations fall from 584 to 373.

Iveco Ford, which became market leader for the month, saw sales leap from 489 in 1992 to 810, giving it a year-to-date increase from 872 to 1,161.

Overall truck and artic sales for the year to date increased from 4,660 to 4,928. However sales of commercial vehicles were 7.5% lower than the 16,307 registered in the same month last year and 1.5% down in the first two months at 32,503 compared to last year's figure at 32,984.

Manufacturers pinpoint the three axle tractor market as an area which appears to be picking up sales. This could be attributed to the cheaper vehicle excise duty level paid on a three-axle unit.
