FIVE pre-production models of a totally new vehicle in the 32-ton artic class are soon to be unveiled for the first time.

The units, manufactured by George Dennison, a former director of Dennison Trailers Ltd, are being manufactured in the Republic of Ireland. Design and pre-production work was carried out in nearly total secrecy.

The company expects to be manufacturing approximately 250 units a year 'in the near future," possibly as early as two years after the launch. With an eye to the export market, they are designed for both left and right-hand drive.

CM's sources told us that the first priority market will be the Republic of Ireland, but some vehicles will be sold in the North.

The tractive units will be offered with a choice of engines, either the Gardner 6LXB or 8LX13 or the RollsRoyce Turbocharged 265. They will use a Fuller 9-speed range change gearbox and the Eaton double-reduction rear axle.

The design incorporates an all-steel cab and power steering.

Dennison Trailers Ltd and Dennison Trailers (Ireland) Ltd were bought out by Crane Fruehauf nine months ago. A spokesman for Crane Fruehauf said he supposed there was nothing in that agreement to prevent the new lorry being called the Dennison.

Upon completion it will be the only lorry designed and manufactured from the ground up in the Republic.
