THIS week's prizewinner is Mr. D. 1131:rnett, of Chichester, Sussex. He says that with the type of rear-door latch shown in the diagram it is quite common for the lower catch to fracture at the point shown by the arrow—this is commonly caused by floor damage and by dropped hinges.

In the event of such a fracture it becomes almost impossible to open the door without damaging the panels. An easy way to provide against the possibility of such inconvenience is to drill a + in. hole down through the floor just behind the striker plate. Then, if the catch breaks when the door is closed, it is a simple matter to open it by inserting it screwdriver upwards through the hole.
