Ai increase in IRTE membership at the rate of 160 a year and a current membership of around 3,000 were announced by Mr. J. A. Fletcher, national secretary, at the annual general meeting of the Manchester and District centre.

Referring to the Institute's first national conference to be held in Birmingham on May 20-22 this year, Mr. Fletcher stated that Mr. William Swallow would be the chairman of the conference and that Mr. E. B. H. Elsbury would be presenting a revised paper on the status of the road transport engineer. Mr. W. T. Skinner would be giving a talk on the p.s.v. engineer.

After mentioning that the sub-dividing of the Metropolitan centre into two and the formation of the Australian centre had increased the total to 19, Mr. Fletcher said that three additional centres might be formed.

These would comprise a South Midlands centre, which in part would derive membership from the western section of the area covered by the North and South London centres and the southern section of the area covered by the Midlands centre; a North Wales/West Cheshire centre, which would draw some membership from the North Western centre; and an East Riding/North Lincoln centre.
