W HEN an application by Cawthorn and Silly v clair Ltd., of Birtley, was reopened before the Northern Licensing Authority in Newcastle on Wednesday, Mr. Robert Cawthorn, joint managing director, said that at present they were unable to take the work offered for the South Durham Iron and Steel Co. with their existing fleet, because of a shortage of vehicles. The hearing was adjourned until next Monday to allow all parties concerned to study figures submitted by the applicants.

Mr. Cawthorn said that six of their vehicles were off the road each day for repairs and maintenance and they were unable to meet demands.

At the previous hearing on February 25, the company had applied for a licence for 10 extra artics to carry steel froth the West Hartlepool works of the Iron and Steel Co.

Mr. J. A. T. Hanlon, the LA, adjourned the application on that day but granted a threemonth short-term licence for four vehicles.

Higher Cumberland Fares: An application for fares increases by Cumberland Motor Services Ltd., of Whitehaven, was granted by the Northern Traffic Commissioners at Carlisle last week. The chairman, Mr. J. A. T. Hanlon, told objectors from West Cumberland councils that "while we have the greatest sympathy with passengers throughout West Cumberland who use the services, we feel the application is justified".
