Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

VOLLOWING unsuccessful approaches to the three Ministers responsible for the White Paper on investment incentives, the chairman of the Road Haulage Association, Mr. A. R. Butt, has written to the Prime Minister.

The White Paper lays down that investment grants will not be given for vehicles. The RHA maintains that this decision is in conflict with the principles of investment which the White Paper sets out. "The function of road goods vehicles", says Mr. Butt, "is essentially that of a conveyor belt serving those manufacturing and extractive industries which are to receive substantial benefits". Taking into account the effects of corporation tax, operators of commercial vehicles would actually be worse off as a result of the new proposals.

The letter also draws attention to the need to improve the standards of fitness of vehicles and the possibility of increased haulage charges as a result of the increased net cost of goods vehicles.

ANOTHER PIA LORRY PARK OPENED

THE second lorry reception park at the Royal Docks announced last October as under construction has now been completed and opened on Monday for lorries With export cargoes for the Royal Albert and King George V Docks. It will be in operation from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily from Mondays to Fridays.

Situated to the north of Nos. 7 to 11 sheds, Royal Albert Dock, with its entrance and reception area at the western end, the lay-out consists of 19 ranking lanes each 500 ft. by 12 ft. running eastwards to a 60 ft. turning area.

The park will accommodate about 300 lorries and will serve berths on the south side of Royal Albert Dock and north side of King George V Dock.

On average some 3,000 vehicles a week have been using No. 1 lorry park and it is expected that the new facility will handle initially 2,000 vehicles a week.

Experience since the introduction of lorry reception facilities has shown that they have been welcomed by drivers, haulage contractors and shipping and forwarding agents as they have proved to be a more efficient method of handling export arrivals.

Clearing Houses Postponement: Owing to the announcement of the General Election, the dinner dance of the National Conference of Road Transport Clearing Houses arranged for March 22, together with the annual general meeting and lunch the following day, has been postponed.
