WHEN Messrs. William Bros., Station

Garage, Queensferry, and eight of their drivers appeared before Hawarden magistrates last week, they pleaded not guilty. to 70 summonses concerning alleged breaches of the drivers' hours regulations.

Prosecuting, Mr. Q. Ouseley-Smith said that the charges resulted from an examination of the firm's records by Mr. W. Colton, senior traffic inspector. Records had been used as lime sheets. and times of ceasing driving had no been synonymous with ceasing work.

The firm had explained that in some instances the records referred to Saturday work, when a weekly maintenance check was done, whenever possible outside normal working hours. Drivers had also included time spent in servicing and fuelling vehicles.

Mr. E. Jones, defending, said that there was no case where it could be suggested that there was any danger of driver fatigue. The drivers had taken their breaks.

The firm were fined a total of £13 on 23 summonses and the drivers £13 on 23 charges. Twenty-four summonses were dismissed, and an advocate's fee of £15 15s. was allowed. with 5s. costs.
