T"proposal to increase the speed limit of heavy goods vehicles to 30 m.p.h. is referred to in the annual report of the Mansion House Association on Transport.

On behalf of the Association, a statement was forwarded to the Minister last year, pointing out that, as traders, members could see certain benefits to he derived from the proposal, provided that safeguards were applied in the interests of safety and road maintenance. It was considered that there should be introduced a system of load-limit plating and that the speed-limit categories should be based on gross laden weights. and not on the unladen weights of vehicles, MR. PALMER PHILLIPS JOINS LAWSON PIGOTT BOARD

AT a dinner and cleince given by Lawson Pigott Motors, Ltd., on March 4, Mr. M. W. Harris, who presided. announced the appointment of Mr. A. F. Palmer Phillips, formerly of Vauxhall Motors, Ltd., Co the Lawson Pigott board.

He mentioned Mr. Phillips's infectious optimism, and said that the board was fortunate in obtaining the services of a man who was so well known in the industry and a former president of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders. He also talked of his own experiences in South Africa, where he had founded a company, Lawson Pigott Motors (Rhodesia). Ltd.. at Umtali. This deals in trucks and cars and has a staff of nearly 30.

Other speakers were Mr. C. F. Watts. of the British Oxygen Co.. Ltd., Mr. Palmer Phillips. Mr. C. H. Fisher, anti Mr. H. J. Crisp. Mr. Crisp mentioned that the company had built Berm vehicles right from the chassis frame, and was amongst the first to fit oil engines.

OBITUARY

'WE regret to announce the death of VI' MR. E. A. HARVEY, managing director of Repetition Tyre and Accessories, Ltd. He was 60. His company was formed in 1927 and Mr. Harvey was a founder-member of the Retread Manufacturers' Association, and one of the original members of the National Tyre Distributors' Association. He represented the employers' side, on the Wages Council and was chairman of the retreading side of the rubber industry in the National Joint *Industrial Council.
