Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Following the successful six-month trial of the Daily 65014G cage tipper fuelled with liquid biomethane (LBM) running with Camden Council, Iveco UK has chosen Gasrec as its preferred supplier of LBM (see page 48).

Martin Flach, product director at Iveco, says: The market for gas vehicles on the Continent is many times that of the UK — but this is largely due to the poor infrastructure and quality of gas from the Victorian mains that has a high moisture content and has historically resulted in reliability issues when used in commercial vehicles."

Gasrec's Doug Leaf explains that LBM is "a non-fossil version of natural gas that's extremely pure, being made up of 98% methane and 2% nitrogen. It can be a direct substitute for LNG and is very dry when compared with compressed natural gas."

According to Leaf. the clean-burning nature of LBM results in a 90% reduction in particulate matter (soot), a 60% reduction in NOx and a 30% reduction in engine noise, "Typically, we see a reduction of 5dB(A) at one metre and a 60-70% reduction in CO2. And it operates on the same principle as bunkered fuel."

But it's worth noting that LBM is bought by weight rather than volume — 1kg of biomethane is equivalent to 1.2kg of diesel.
