House of Lords committee urging the European Commission to take legal action against member states that have prevented international freight movements.
The European Union Committee's recommendations for a fully liberalised market could now be turned into legally binding provisions, which countries will have to implement, according to RFG chairman Lord Tony Berkeley.
He says UK rail freight operators have struggled to provide a good service on the continent because some countries are opposed to liberalisation, despite directives being adopted eight years ago that should have allowed fair competition: "There is a sense of frustration. Private sector operators are not being treated fairly. Legal proceedings against member states could result in a possible fine at European Court, which is embarrassing for the state concerned."
