CV REGISTRATIONS fell by 50% last month, with both the truck and van sectors continuing to plummet, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

Vans were the poorest performer with a 50.2% fall for the month and a 46.4% crash for the year to date.

Iveco headed the slide with a 71.3% decline, followed by Renault, which slumped 672% and Vauxhall with 62.9%.

For trucks, the performance was equally poor, with a decline of 44% for May and 39% for the year. Worst hit was Volvo Trucks, crashing 63.7% and just edging out MAN at 63%, with Scania next at 55.5%.

SMMT chief executive Paul Everitt says: "There are early signs of improving consumer confidence, but UK van and truck companies continue to face difficult economic conditions. Businesses remain cautious about future prospects, but it will take a while for improving confidence to register in the market."
