TWO TIPS FOR HOLLAND

DEALERS CURRJE AT BEDFOM'

• Currie Motors Group truck division, has opened a new Iveco Ford Truck main dealership near Heathrow Airport, at Great South West Road, Bedfont. The IFT dealership (01-890 1190) will handle sales of secondhand trucks and new vehicles from the long-wheelbase Transit up to 38 tonne tractive units.

Service hours will be from 6am in the morning to 12 midnight running on two shifts and if there is sufficient demand for servicing it could go to 24 hours on a triple shift.

In addition to sales, servicing and parts Currie Bedfont will have a commercial vehicle rental fleet offering vehicles from a Fiesta van to a 7. 5-tonner with status covering both North Derbyshire and South Yorkshire.

PRICES VOLKSWAGEN

• VAG has raised the prices of Volkswagen light commercial vehicle models by an average of 2.7%. Examples of the new prices (excluding VAT) are as follows: Polo van, £4,465 (was 24,356); Caddy diesel pickup, £5,362 (was £5,231); Transporter panel van (petrol 4-speed) £7,327 (was £7,148); LT35E high-roof turbo diesel van, 213,694 (was £12,8.33); LT5OD long wheelbase chassis cab, 213,415 (ws £13,058).

Factory-fitted optional equipment on VW light commercials has also increased in price by an average of 2.5%.

AUCTIONS WMA TRUCK SALES

• A new vehicle auction company — Westbury Motor Auctions — is now open for business serving second-hand truck buyers in the Bristol, Swindon, Gloucester, Salisbury and Yeovil areas.

The 2.43 hectare site at Brook lane, Westbury includes two auction rings, a cafeteria and tiered seating.

It holds commercial vehicle and plant auctions on the third Wednesday of every month at llam. Car auctions are held three times a week on Tuesday and Thursday at 12 noon, and on Fridays at 6pm.

WMA claims it has already over 700 vehicles passing through its sales every week, and is used by a number of large local authorities for the disposal of vehicles. It also operates a collection and delivery service.

• TankCon, the Road Haulage Association's third tanker convention and exhibition, will take place from 17-19 June in Blackpool.

Business sessions, with speakers from ICI, the Health and Safety Executive, GICN and British Nuclear Fuels, will be held at the Norbreck Castle Hotel while the exhibition, at the Norbreck Castle and Norcalympia, will show 50 vehicles in the open with 80 under-cover stands displaying a range of ancillary equipment and services,

HAMPSHIRE LDOY

• The Hampshire Centre of the Lorry Driver of the Year Competition holds its regional contest at the Goodwood Motor Circuit this Saturday (13 June). It will be the 33rd consecutive contest run by the centre since the competition began, and alongside the driving tests — which are divided into classes from 3.5 to 38 tonnes — will be a small commercial vehicle exhibition organised by local dealers.

• Townsend Thoresen's superferry is now operating on the company's Dover-Calais run. the 26,400 tonne Pride of Dover can take 2,300 passengers and up to 100 trucks or 650 light vehicles. The new ferry has a separate dining room for drivers as well as driversonly cabins.

New berths have been built at Dover to accommodate the Pride of Dover, which will be joined later in the year by its sister ship, Pride of Calais. The latest two-tier, double-width loading ramps will help speed up loading and unloading of vehicles.

A total of £85 million has been invested in the two vessels which have the latest safety aids including video monitors and warning lights to confirm that the bow and stern doors are closed.

TRAINING LP&G HAZCOURSES

• Batley, West Yorkshirebased Liquids Powders & Gas Transport has published the dates of its forthcoming Hazfreight and Hazpack training courses.

The three-day Hazfreight courses start on 15 June, 13 July and 3 August. They cost £138 and include meals/refreshments, but not accommodation. Course topics include knowledge of products, carrying requirements, legislation, fire fighting and first aid.

The two-day Hazpack courses are designed to help hauliers conform with the recently-introduced Road Traffic (Carriage of Dangerous Substances in Packages etc) Regulations 1986, and commence on 6July, 23 July and 24 August. Cost is R103.50p.

• Central Weighing of Kidderminster has added a new single-axle electronic weighbridge to its '900' series weighbridge range.

The latest 960 model has a heavy duty deck, capable of handling single axle loads up to 15 tonnes, plus sealed-for-life loadcells, connected to a digital desk console with integral printer. It also features an automatic weigh/print system and an external traffic control box.

The 960 weigher is fully automatic, with the weighing cycle activated when the first axle of the vehicle passes over the bridge. The driver does not have to leave his cab, and noone else is required to complete the cycle which provides both axle and gross readings. CW claims an accuracy of plus or minus 30kg per axle.

SBG CENTRE • SBG Engineering has been appointed by Lucas Kienzle Instruments as its tachograph centre in Kilmarnock. SBG is at Nursery Avenue, just off the main A77 road from Glasgow to Ayr. The DTp-approved tachograph centre handles tachograph installations and replacements, calibration, twoyear checks, resealing and repairs, as well as the sale of speed limiters and other LK products.

SUPERPAK DRIVER PROM TACHODISC • Tachodisc has launched a new 'Driver Superpak' containing 300 discs, 50 record entry envelopes (each taking a week's used discs), a plastic wallet for keeping current discs and envelopes clean, and an office filing box to store a year's used charts.

The pack also includes a pocket-sized hand analyser for instant in-cab readouts on hours driven, a driver's vehicle defect duplicate book and a blind disc to protect the stylus when the tachograph is not being used. The complete outfit costs £14.60 plus VAT.

BACK UP wrni VMS FROM OGDEN • An electronic control system designed to improve safety when vehicles or mobile plant are reversing, has been produced by Ogden Electronics of Otley, West Yorkshire.

The Vehicle Monitoring System consists of a rearmounted short range radar scanner fed from the vehicle's electrical system and linked via a central control unit into the vehicle's gearbox and braking system.

When a person or object is detected within a pre-set protected area to the rear while reversing the system automatically stops the truck.

VMS, which uses solid-state electronics, has taken five years to develop and costs £3,250 when fittd to municipal vehicles. It takes a day to fit to a vehicle and carries a 1,000 working hours or 12-months warranty.

Ogden is currently developing a lower-cost version which will be in action at a plant demonstration on 16-18 June at Hillhead Quarry near Burton, Derbyshire.
