LOOSENING wheel nuts which have been set to the correct torque is often something of a problem, especially when they've been on the vehicle sometime, Usually the mechanic resorts to a long bar and socket to undo them.
Now a manual impact wrench called Dynapact is available in the UK through the distributors of Facom Tools. Similar to a torque multiplier, the unit is said to be portable and simple to use.
The Dynapact is said to work both clockwise and counterclockwise and is driven manually by a T bar inserted in the 12.7mm (1/2in) square drive input. The T bar is pulled through 60° and torque is built
up in the body, then a ratchet mechanism releases the torque developed in 0.01 seconds as an impact blow through the output square drive. It is essential to use impact (power) sockets on the output side to accommodate the high torque delivery.
A second model with a 19mm (3/4 in) output, the NK300 has a maximum untightening capacity of 2,000Nm (1,500 lbft) and a third 25.4mm (1n) drive model (Nm300) up to 3,900Nm (2,900 lbft) over 20 blows and under favourable conditions.
