THE OVERALL winner at the Kent area heat of the CM Lorry Driver of the Year competition was E. Jarvis of Shell UK Oil. But Mr Jarvis — driver A01 — paid the price for being one of the first competitors of the day, reports MIKE RUTHERFORD.

Following his 7am start he did not stay for the afternoon award ceremony and duly failed to collect his numerous trophies. Roger Hemming of PSTO (N), HM Naval Base, Chatham came a close second to Mr Jarvis as runner-up to the overall winner.

LDoY Kent organiser John O'Brien said that the facilities at the Gillingham Business Park had their limitations.

"We're looking for a new site next year — a site that we can use every year for about the next five to 10 years. It would be marvellous if someone could offer us a new home with basic facilities."

Anyone who knows of a large site that could stage the Kent leg of the LDoY competition for the next few years (remember, it would only be used once a year) can contact Mr O'Brien at BOC Transhield, Faversham, Tel: 0795-534171 ext 51. Class winners at last weekend's heats were:
